Norfolkline opens new terminal in Vlaardingen
December 14th, 2006
After forty-five years operating from Scheveningen, its back to the roots for Norfolkline as we return to the location from where the company once started in the 1950’s.
During the last quarter of 2006 Norfolkline shifted its ferry services from Scheveningen to the ‘state of the art’ new ferry terminal in Vlaardingen, near Rotterdam.
From the new terminal in Vlaardingen, Norfolkline operates services to Felixstowe and Killingholme, U.K. with more than 1,500 port calls per year around the clock. The service to Killingholme is a brand new service which was initiated with the opening of the new terminal.
The terminal has a quay wall with a length of 900 meters and a land surface of around 11.2 hectares, which is around twice the size of former terminal in Scheveningen, meeting the strong growth demands of Norfolkline.
The land area will mainly be used for cross-docking and trailer cleaning facilities, an automated entrance with video-check, three multiple berths with the possibility to accommodate the newest generation of Ro-Ro (Roll on/ Roll off) vessels with lengths up to 220 metres. The terminal also has a huge parking space with additional trailer and truck workshops (the workshops in Vlaardingen are arguably one of the biggest trailers and truck work shops in Europe).
Geographically, the location of the new terminal in Vlaardingen, close to the important highways around Rotterdam, will allow customers an advantage both in distance as well as in driving time. With the current diesel rates and the limitation on driving hours, Vlaardingen will be even more attractive for ferry transportation to and from the U.K.
With this new terminal in Vlaardingen, Norfolkline is poised to grow further in the coming years.
